2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information you provide when you sign in
Authentication is handled through Google Sign-In. When you choose to create an account or sign in, we receive from Google:
- Your name;
- Your email address;
- Your Google profile photo (URL); and
- A Google-issued user identifier.
You may also optionally add profile customisations within the App (display name/username, chosen avatar). You can use core parts of the App as a Guest without signing in.
2.2 Information created through your use of the App
- Saved articles / bookmarks — the list of articles you bookmark.
- Reading activity — a count of articles you open, used for your "Articles Read" statistic.
- App preferences — chosen language (Odia or English) and Dark Mode setting.
2.3 Information collected automatically
- Push-notification token — a device token used solely to deliver breaking-news and editorial notifications (only if you grant notification permission).
- Diagnostics — anonymous crash and performance data generated by the app runtime to help us fix bugs and improve stability. This is not used to identify you.
3. Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect or store your password — authentication is performed entirely by Google.
- We do not collect payment or financial information (the App is free and contains no purchases).
- We do not collect precise or background location (GPS).
- We do not access your contacts, SMS, call logs, microphone, or camera.
- We do not sell your personal data to anyone.
4. How We Use Your Information
- To authenticate you and maintain your signed-in session.
- To store and sync your bookmarks, profile, and preferences to your account so they follow you across devices.
- To display your "Articles Read" and saved-articles statistics.
- To send breaking-news and editorial push notifications you have opted into.
- To diagnose crashes, maintain security, and improve the App's stability and content.
- To comply with applicable law and respond to lawful requests.
We do not use your personal data for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not perform advertising-based profiling.
5. Legal Bases for Processing
Depending on the law that applies to you, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Your consent — given when you sign in, opt into notifications, or save content. You may withdraw consent at any time (see Section 11).
- Legitimate interests / legitimate use — to secure the App, prevent abuse, and improve our service.
- Legal obligation — where processing is required to comply with law.

7. Third-Party Services
We use trusted third-party providers to operate the App. Each processes data under its own privacy policy:
- Google Sign-In (Google LLC) — authentication. Google Privacy Policy.
- Supabase, Inc. — secure cloud storage of your account, profile, and bookmarks, protected by row-level security. Supabase Privacy Policy.
- Expo (Expo/EAS) — app delivery, over-the-air updates, and push-notification delivery. Expo Privacy Policy.
- YouTube / Google API Services — to display our video content. Use is subject to the YouTube Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy.
- nirnaytv.com (WordPress REST API) — to fetch news content. No personal data is sent in these content requests.
8. Data Sharing & Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data. We may share limited data only:
- with the service providers listed in Section 7, strictly to operate the App;
- if required by law, court order, or a valid request from a public authority;
- to protect the rights, safety, and property of Nirnay TV, our users, or the public;
- in connection with a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, in which case we will notify you of any change in ownership or use of your personal data.
9. Data Storage, Location & International Transfers
Your account data is stored on secure Supabase cloud infrastructure. Some service providers may process data on servers located outside India. Where personal data is transferred across borders, we take reasonable steps to ensure it remains protected consistent with this Policy and applicable law.
10. Data Retention
We retain your account profile, bookmarks, and preferences for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, we remove identifying personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law. Anonymous, aggregated statistics that cannot identify you may be retained for analytics.
11. Your Rights & Choices
Subject to applicable law (including the DPDP Act and GDPR), you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- Correction — correct inaccurate or incomplete data (editable in-app or by request);
- Erasure — delete your account and personal data (Section 12);
- Withdraw consent — turn off notifications (device settings or in-app), or stop using the App;
- Grievance redressal — raise a complaint with our Grievance Officer (Section 18);
- Nominate (DPDP Act) — nominate another individual to exercise your rights in the event of death or incapacity.
You may also clear your saved articles and reading history at any time from the in-app Profile screen. To exercise any right, email admin@nirnaytv.com.
12. Account & Data Deletion
You can delete your data at any time:
- In-app: Profile → Logout clears your session and locally-stored data on the device.
- Full account deletion: follow our dedicated Data Deletion Policy, or email admin@nirnaytv.com with the subject "Data Deletion Request".
We complete verified deletion requests within 30 days.
13. Children's Privacy
The App is a general-audience news service and is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum digital-consent age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. Under the DPDP Act, processing of a child's data requires verifiable parental consent; we do not knowingly process such data. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
14. Security
We apply industry-standard safeguards: encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), authentication delegated to Google (we never handle your password), and row-level security on our database so each user can access only their own data. While no method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, we work to protect your information and will notify affected users and authorities of a personal-data breach as required by law.
15. Permissions We Request
- Internet / network access — required to load news, video, and sync your data.
- Notifications (Android 13+ POST_NOTIFICATIONS) — optional; only to send news alerts you opt into. You can decline or revoke this anytime in device settings.
The App does not request microphone, camera, location, contacts, or SMS permissions.
16. Cookies & Local Storage
The App is not a website and does not use advertising cookies. It stores small amounts of data locally on your device (e.g., your session, preferences, and cached bookmarks) so the App works quickly and offline. Embedded content (such as YouTube video) may set its own cookies governed by the relevant provider's policy.
17. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, through an in-app notice. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
18. Grievance Officer & Contact
